Below are some of the repeating questions I got over the years. If you find your questions are still unanswered, please contact me, and I’ll be happy to help.
I am a complete beginner. Can I study with you?
Yes, absolutely! I accept students of all levels, and will be happy to help you build a strong, healthy vocal technique- regardless of your experience.
Can anybody learn how to sing?
The short answer- yes, I believe so.
Whether or not you’ll be able to improve your singing has more to do with your level of commitment and concentration than your natural talent. If you’re willing to practice, try out new things and step out of your comfort zone you will most likely be able to improve, a lot! A developed musical ear and natural talent can help, but they’re not the sole requirement.
Can anybody become a professional singer?
The requirements of professional singers today are high, and it’s an extremely competitive field. Aside from being a strong performer with a versatile voice and a wide repertoire, you will need to have some business and networking skills. It also helps to have a developed musicianship- music theory and some piano skills.
My suggestion is to take it one step at a time. Focus on your next goal: the choir in school, an audition for a solo part in the school’s musical, your next student recital, an audition to the conservatory, singing for friends and family and so on. It should be more about what you learn than what you achieve. Your road will become clearer as you advance. You may or may not end up working as a professional singer, but you’re sure to learn a lot along the way!
Is it possible to learn singing from an instructional CD/ DVD?
A teacher can do one important thing that a CD or a DVD can never do: give you feedback!!! If you are practicing only with a CD, you might be practicing things in the wrong way without even know it. Books, CDs and DVDs are a great resource for additional
How much time should I spend practicing?
That changes a lot from student to student, based on each individual’s learning habits and goals. It can be anywhere from two hours a day to half an hour twice a week. The best way to find out what works best for you is to just try.
I have an audition tomorrow- can you help me prepare?
I will do my best. Have the music and lyrics memorized, bring either the sheet music or a recorded accompaniment, and make sure you are able to sing the song from beginning to end without stopping, from memory. I will do my best to give you tips that will be useful to you during your audition.
Next time, prepare earlier!
